End of Summer: No Back-to-School for Us!

September Our Way: The Adventures Begin!

As summer wraps up, families everywhere are getting ready for the usual back-to-school frenzy. But for us, it’s business as usual. See, we’re unschoolers (or super relaxed homeschoolers), my kids lead the way when it comes to learning.

This year, we’re exploring some fun new avenues with Outschool programs. Mo. is diving into Anime drawing, and No. is venturing into the stars with an Astronomy class. We’re also signed up for some cool city programs—science class, anyone?

I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to provide this kind of child-led education. Now let’s be real: it’s not easy in a society that expects parents to follow a set script. We’re constantly bombarded with what we should be doing, often leading us to disconnect from our instincts and, more importantly, from our children’s actual needs and dreams.

I’m about to get my hands on Hold On to Your Kids by Dr. Gabor Maté and Dr. Gordon Neufeld. I’ve been a longtime fan of Dr. Maté and his work. This book takes a deep dive into how we can reawaken those natural parenting instincts and keep our connection with our kids strong. It’s all about stepping back into our roles as the true sources of comfort, safety, and guidance that our children need.

And honestly, this resonates with me on so many levels. My daughter is a free spirit, the kind of kid who dances in the rain without a second thought. My son? He’s got his eyes on the stars, completely fascinated by the galaxy. This child-led approach allows them to explore what they love, while also letting us stay connected as a family.

So, while everyone else is stocking up on school supplies, I’m just here, embracing the freedom to let my kids be who they are — dreamers, creators, and, most importantly, just kids.

I know not everyone has the luxury of opting out of the traditional school system, and for those who can’t, I’m cheering you on. Keep rocking your parenting journey and finding those moments of connection. We’re all in this together, celebrating every win and staying true to what matters most: our kids’ happiness and growth. 🌟
